Our Vision and Mission

Vision

Family Matters sees a world where the power of love has replaced the love of power. Family Matters sees a legal system that inspires and supports sustainable, beneficial, re-generative behaviours, relationships and enterprises - a system that allows individuals, organisations and communities to conduct all their legal affairs in alignment with their values, their principles and their vision for a better world.

Mission

Family Matters’ mission is to inspire and empower clients. Inspiring clients means acknowledging that each client has the power to influence and change their own lives.

Empowering clients means providing support to clients in conducting their legal affairs in alignment with their values, their principles and their vision for a better world and to stimulate and sustain positive relationships and enterprises, with positive results and proceeds - for Family Matters clients, for the local and global communities and for future generations.

This process of empowerment sees clients being provided with tools that can be used to produce better outcomes for all concerned.

Our Principles and Values

In the service of Family Matters Vision and Mission, Family Matters practices law in accordance with the following principles:

  • Winning does not require a loser.
  • Safety is mutual or it is not real safety. [1]
  • Working collaboratively with others and together with them designing sustainable, beneficial and enjoyable relationships and enterprises which is far better than engaging as opposing forces trying to win an advantage for one party over the other.
  • Taking the time for open, straightforward communication and achieving mutual comprehension and clarity (even when it is uncomfortable) is worthwhile - essential even, for creating and maintaining successful, sustainable and enjoyable relationships, transactions and businesses/organisations.
  • Addressing conflict and crisis need not involve coercion or manipulation.
[1] “Safety” as used here means having sufficient predictability so that one’s expectations are reasonably assured, enabling one to plan and venture with well founded confidence that one will retain the power to take a meaningful role in responding to changing circumstances and will have an equal voice and be treated fairly should conflict arise.

Client Role

  • Family Matters expect clients to take an active, fully engaged role throughout negotiation of their cases and drafting of written agreements.
  • Family Matters value honesty, reliability, excellence, responsiveness, kindness and enjoyment.
  • Family Matters believe that integrity (consciously aligning one’s actions with ones deeply held values) is the cornerstone of any worthwhile endeavour.
  • Each client acting in integrity and taking responsibility for his/her actions/desires is key to Family Matters willingness to be involved in the client's family affairs.
  • Family Matters values honest communication and striving for clarity even when events make them appear uncomfortable. When it comes to both personal and professional behaviour, Family Matters believe the best guide is the Golden Rule.
